Asnuntuck Community College
Asnuntuck Community College offers two tracks for web design that prepare students to reach a variety of goals within web design—the Web Designer Certificate and Information Systems Technology (A.S.), the latter being an accredited web design degree. The certificate’s primary purpose is to ensure immediate entry-level employment following program completion, while the A.S. degree program also prepares for 4-year schooling and more advanced IT work including advancement within current jobs. Web Designer Certificate
Asnuntuck Community College’s Web Designer Certificate requires only 19 credit hours. The courses therein provide the necessary training within a wide array of web design backgrounds and purposes, through which students are prepared to quickly and efficiently begin their careers in web design and maintenance. Students must successfully complete six courses to obtain the certificate. Students choose between Introduction to Software Applications and Structured Programming; all certificate students must also take two Web Design and Development courses, Fundamentals of Internet Programming, Introduction to Computer Graphics, and Principles of Marketing.
The certificate program focuses on job skills. It is targeted toward those looking to move directly from their educational experience into a web design and maintenance job. While the career opportunities may be limited without further education, entry-level positions are available and the certificate, therefore, allows for immediate transition into such a job.
Information Systems Technology (A.S.)
As one of the accredited web design degree programs in Connecticut, the A.S. degree at Asnuntuck Community College aims to further equip people who already have basic programming and IT knowledge and/or experience. The degree program seeks to increase students’ proficiency in the field, offering a comprehensive educational experience including writing and communication to ensure productivity in the business community and marketability of the individual’s achievements and overall competence.
The A.S. degree in Information Systems Technology requires a minimum of 30 credit hours in the IT courses including Database Management, Database Design, and Soft Skills for a Digital Workplace. Courses in Composition, Technical Writing, Sociology, Science, Mathematics, and Liberal Arts are also included in the program to offer a well-rounded learning experience to prepare students holistically to become the best web designers possible.

The Web Publishing Option is one of three IT programs at Capital Community College. This program’s highest priority is efficiency in scripting languages; as such, students are highly equipped for professional and creative design that will be in demand especially for newly developed and growing businesses. Graduates will be ready for one of three options: entry-level work, advancement in their current jobs, or transfer to a four-year school.
Associate in Science Degree Program Computer and Information Systems: Web Publishing Option
Upon graduation, those successful in this program will possess knowledge of the relationship between computers and business, the fundamental applications of the most widely used business software programs, and excellent communication capabilities. They will be able to utilize their understanding of scripting languages to benefit companies and play a vital roll in the growth of e-commerce and demonstrate ability to create design according to the aesthetic and professional needs and demands of a given organization. Students will also be given guidance in the development of a portfolio of their talents and accomplishments to help in the upcoming stages of their careers.
The program requires 67 credit hours that are usually completed in four semesters. Math, Social Sciences, Accounting, Public Speaking, Business Communication, Composition and Literature, Multimedia Communications, and Fine Arts courses are all included in the program in addition to the Computer/IT courses to provide the eclectic educational experience promised, forming confidence in students for their field.

Associate in Science, Studio Art: Graphic Design Option
A.S. graduates in the Studio Art: Graphic Design Option program are expected to exhibit understanding of how to use the tools of graphic design appropriately and resourcefully, contributing to the field artistically. The learning outcomes include a strong emphasis on problem solving and preparing work to be exhibited. The language of the arts is encouraged to help students effectively analyze and critique their own work as well as that of others to benefit the entire community of the arts. Specific, individual art projects are the center point of the educational experience in Gateway’s Graphic Design Program. While preparation for work and marketing one’s skills as a graphic designer are certainly present in the program, the creative process and the aesthetic outcome are given the foremost attention and regard.

Housatonic Community College’s Computer Information Systems program equips students for entry or advancement in their careers in varied business-related computer careers. Graphic Design, A.S.
This degree program is preparatory for those planning to work in a commercial arts field. Design, Fine Arts, Arts Education, and Computer Graphics and Advertising are all emphases therein. The program aims for a full integration between the creative and business elements of graphic arts. There are no prerequisites for the program, so people seeking to enter will receive their training in this program with no need for prior field experience or education.
The application of graphic design as both an art form and a means of communication is the overarching purpose of the program that brings together each of its learning outcomes. Creative thinking and conveying messages through design that can be utilized through a wide array of media are the hallmarks of a student’s coursework. Effective utilization of all current tools and programs available as well as preparation for specific jobs in the field are offered.
Multimedia Studies (A.A.)
Various areas of artistic digital design are taught in this program. Animation and interactive programming are given a great deal of attention and regard in the Multimedia Studies program. While the Graphic Design degree combines the artistic and business aspects of the field, this program places its emphasis on the creative. Learning to appreciate and use the computer for its multitude of capacities to aid in the arts is the highest value of the Multimedia Studies program.
General Education Core courses are required (as they are in the Graphic Design program) to ensure the school’s overall learning outcomes are achieved. Specific outcomes of the Multimedia Studies program include production of animation, interactive presentations, 3-D work, and digital video.

The Fine Arts School at Middlesex Community College values art primarily for its avocational application in students’ lives.
